The ultra high-end market has been slow the last few months, but it got a big boost today when a new waterfront house on the north end of Siesta Key sold Thursday at $7.07 million. It is the highest-priced residential sale in Sarasota County in a year.

The 7,132-square-foot house, with West Indies-inspired architecture, is at 3466 Gulfmead Drive. The American buyers were represented by Mackenzie Mudgett and Pat Mudgett of Michael Saunders & Co.’s Main Street office. Michael Hays, also a Saunders agent, represented the seller, Gulfmead Investments LLC, which is headed by Jeffrey P. Steinwachs, according to state records. The house, built on speculation, was on the MLS for 201 days.

The property was sold in February 2012 for $1.7 million. It was once the residence of former New College president Dallas Dort, a rancher and attorney. He helped develop the Marshall Plan while serving in the Truman Administration and died in 2004. The Dort house was demolished prior to the 2012 sale.

The new house took two years to build. The development team included contractor Bruce Saba and Hays. Bill Tagland was the architect of record.

In February 2012, Snook Inn, on the northern tip of Siesta Key, sold at $10 million. In March, the Nelson home in Harbor Acres sold for $7 million. It is being extensively renovated.
