Letter From Home: 2016 Aurora Awards

It wasn’t a banner year for local builders and developers at the Southeast Building Conference in Orlando, but if you are one of the builders who won an Aurora Award for design in the construction business, it was a good year, indeed.

The Aurora Awards honor the year’s best designs in both residential, commercial and developmental design. Sarasota-Bradenton companies were eclipsed by their rivals in Naples this year for total number of awards, but several local companies brought home trophies.

Two levels of awards are presented — Grand Auroras and Auroras. Grand Aurora awards were won by Josh Wynne Construction, Koral & Gobuty Developments and Minto Communities.

GRAND AURORA AWARDS

Best Single-Family Home, 3,500 to 3,999 square feet: The Resolute, Murray Homes and CADD Design with developer SMR, Lakewood Ranch.

Best Interior Merchandising, Rental Apartment or Condominium, less than $1 million: Mariner at Marina Walk, Minto Communities and Rhett Alexander, Bradenton.

Green Construction: Sea Breeze, Josh Wynne Construction and Potvin Design Co., Sarasota.

Water-Wise Home: Mirabella, Synergy Building Corp. and Koral & Gobuty Developments with architect JKing Designs, Bradenton.

Energy-Efficient Home: Sea Breeze, Josh Wynne Construction and Potvin Design Co., Sarasota.

AURORA AWARDS

Best Recreational Facility: Harbour Isle Beach Club, Minto Communities, Bradenton.

Best Commercial Project, more than 20,000 square feet: Sarasota National Amenity Center, BUILD LLC, WCI Communities and Fawley Bryant Architects, Venice.

Best Single-Family Home, 3,000 to 3,499 square feet: The Intrepid, Murray Homes and CADD Design with developer SMR, Lakewood Ranch.

Best Single-Family Home, 4,000 to 5,000 square feet: The Bimini, Medallion Home, The Reserve at The Inlets, Bradenton.

Best Interior Merchandising, $500,000 to $1 million: Agostino, WCI Communities and Kay Green Design, Lakewood Ranch.

Best Interior Merchandising, Rental Apartment or Condominium, $1 million or more: Oceana at Marina Walk, Minto Communities and Rhett Alexander, Bradenton.

Save the date

Architect Guy Peterson, who received the 37th Gold Medal from the Florida-Caribbean chapter of the American Institute of Architects on July 23, will be the guest of honor at a reception and panel discussion presented by the Herald-Tribune from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16.

The event will be held in the Community Room of the media group’s headquarters at 1741 Main St., Sarasota. It is open to the public and admission is free. Refreshments will be served. Reservations are required; call 941-361-4065.

Harold Bubil

Recipient of the 2015 Bob Graham Architectural Awareness Award from the American Institute of Architects/Florida-Caribbean, Harold Bubil is real estate editor of the Herald-Tribune Media Group. Born in Newport, R.I., his family moved to Sarasota in 1958. Harold graduated from Sarasota High School in 1970 and the University of Florida in 1974 with a degree in journalism.
