Architecture group offers lecture on Paul Rudolph

The Sarasota Architectural Foundation is presenting two events in January that will focus on midcentury modernism.

"Regional Modernism and the Florida Works of Paul Rudolph" is a lecture by Greg Hall, AIA, of Hall Architects in Sarasota. It will be presented at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Herald-Tribune's Community Room, 1741 Main St. Sarasota.

The lecture will trace Rudolph's career from his earliest works for local architect Ralph Twitchell to his departure from Sarasota to become the Chairman of the Department of Architecture at Yale University. In that 12-year period, "Rudolph's work evolved from being simple regional derivatives of European modern architectural archetype to become some of the most sophisticated examples of modern architecture constructed during the post-World War II period," said Janet Minker, president of SAF.

The suggested donations for the Paul Rudolph Scholarship Fund are $10 for SAF members and $15 for nonmembers. For reservations, go online to saf-srq.org/events. Tickets may be bought at the door.

The SAF's "Garden House" Tour will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at 1640 Wisconsin Lane, Sarasota.

Influenced by the Sarasota school of midcentury modernism, the Garden House was designed and constructed in 1961 by Robert Dye. The current owner bought it in 2009 and renovated both the exterior and interior. The project was a collaboration between architect Greg Hall, AIA, of Hall Architects, and landscape architect Dane Spencer, ASLA, the owner of the house. The east side of the home was peeled back and the roof extended nearly 12 feet to create new inside space and protected outside space. "Captured exterior areas were transformed into a series of private gardens that double the home's useable square footage," said the SAF's Minker.

The house also was strengthened to withstand wind storms and also made more sustainable with the installation of passive and active systems.

"The result is an intimate snapshot of Florida living that harkens back to the post-war period, when Sarasota was leading the international discourse in architectural design," said Minker.

The suggested donations for the Paul Rudolph Scholarship Fund are $15 for SAF members and $20 for nonmembers. For reservations, go online to saf-srq.org/events. Tickets may be bought at the door.

'SHADOW INVENTORY' IS SHRINKING, SAYS CORELOGIC

The supply of residential "shadow inventory" has decreased, according to the latest data compiled by CoreLogic.

As of October 2012, the number of such homes fell to 2.3 million units, representing a supply of seven months. The October inventory level represents a 12.3 percent drop from October 2011, when shadow inventory stood at 2.6 million units.

"Shadow inventory" describes properties for which mortgage payments are seriously delinquent, in foreclosure and held as real estate-owned (REO) by mortgage servicers but not listed for sale.
